Mercury Rev - Deserter´s Songs (1998)

From his first releases as Palace Music, Oldham's whiskey-soaked vocals and lyrical obsessions with death, sex, and religion have made "maturity" something of a non-issue. And yet, with his most recent couple of releases as Bonnie "Prince" Billy, the aesthetic antiquity of his earliest recordings seems to have slowly given way to a more mundane sense of age. On The Letting Go, the humor, dread, and resignation that inform Oldham's music are presented in blissfully unfiltered form, and whether the proximity one feels is to person or persona is ultimately irrelevant; either way, The Letting Go feels close.

With its pristine recording and prominent female backing vocals, opener "Love Comes to Me" evokes Oldham's 2003 album Master and Everyone. Thankfully, the sound of The Letting Go proves to be more inviting and striking than that of its predecessor, as Oldham and Faun Fables vocalist Dawn McCarthy invariably find their way to beautiful moments-- even when the songs themselves aren't particularly engrossing. A late autumn stroll through the woods might not be the most exciting metaphor for an album, but it's a rare treat to hear something this organic and cozy.

Generally speaking, this is true of the album's sequencing as well. Though the more lo-fi and bluesy "Cold & Wet" is a noticeable shift from the rest of the record, it's by no means unwelcome after the perhaps-too-understated "No Bad News". On the whole, The Letting Gois amazingly consistent, Oldham and McCarthy meandering tunefully through subtle but effective changes in texture and tone.

Video Radio Moscow - That Frustrating Sound (Live @ Iowa Jan. 2007)

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Several of them sound like they're named after touristy Southern bars ("Lickskillet", "Luckydutch", "Mistreating Queen") and all of them feel content with burying Briggs' already muffled vocals in wah-wah guitars and gratuitous mid-song jams. There's only one change-of-pace number on the album, the Far East-tapping "Ordovician Fauna", though even that track merely swaps boring pentatonic riffs for boring Indian scale riffs.

Some areas where the band could really rally around: "Timebomb" has a decent melody, and for the split-second of the chorus where Briggs jumps up an octave to deliver a lovelorn yelp, you feel like the song's actually building towards something. Then poof-- a non-descript lick takes over, the pounding, staccato rhythm sections melts into predictable downbeat flab, and Radio Moscow attempt to once again try blowing your mind with a garden variety "jam." The chic criticisms of Cream/Led Zep/Hendrix thievery don't even apply to these classic rock throwbacks-- the band's not swiping full-fledged ideas from anyone. They're barely recreating anything more complicated than atonal finger exercises, a drawback that ultimately makes this debut such a bitch slap to the face of the musical genre that helped proliferate words like "hook" and "riff" in our lexicon. Fortunately, the guys revisiting the tried and true were guitarist-vocalist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney a.k.a. the Black Keys. With the former's blown-cone distortion and slinky riffs, and the latter's positively Bonham-esque way of inhabiting each change with a loose power, they smacked judgment out of one's brain before anyone could call it cliche. Taking cues from Fat Possum-centric blues legends like Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside (both covered here on the first two tracks) and garage fetishists like Billy Childish and Jack White alike, the Akron duo arrived with swagger on these 13 tracks. Tackling covers traditional (like Sleepy John Estes's "Leavin' Trunk") and non (the Beatles's "She Said, She Said") and their own workouts (the aptly titled "Heavy Soul"), THE BIG COME UP wins on the strength of Auerbach's ravagedly expressive vocals--which match the egdes in his guitar tone crag for crag..
